New Album Present Tense out this Fall

John M Gray’s new release Present Tense finds the Nova Scotia songwriter widening his frame without losing his focus. Known for quietly incisive, personal songs, Gray turns outward — taking in a world where private life and public noise blur.The album keeps his roots-based writing at the core, but stretches into looser arrangements, global textures, and voices that reach beyond his East Coast base. Nothing feels ornamental; everything serves the songs.Lyrically, these pieces are shaped by movement and uncertainty: shifting borders, digital overload, climate instability, and the balancing act of staying present in tense times. Gray avoids slogans, favouring sharp observation over certainty.Present Tense is his most expansive record to date: understated, searching, and actively attuned to the world as it is.

Bio

John M Gray's music is an eclectic fusion of styles and influences - from roots to blues, to folk and R&B. His songs are driven by keen-edged lyrics and insights into the highways, back alleys and hidden chambers of the human experience. The Nova Scotia based musician's first solo album, Centreline Bare, was released in 2008 to critical acclaim. CBC Radio said "the wordplay and imagery in these songs is really strong.... I hear echoes of Richard Thompson, Bruce Cockburn, John Hiatt and Steely Dan."His second album, the self-produced Gravity, was released in 2022. Before going solo, Gray fronted storied Halifax roots-rockers The BBQ Kings, and recorded two albums with the band (Mixed Grill, Beyond Acceptable).
